LBN Career Panel

8 March 2021 – Ian’s Answers

Round 1: What do you enjoy most about your career?

Every day is a new adventure. When I got up this morning I did not know how my day would unfold.

Round 2: What does your typical workday look like?

I don’t have a typical day – every day is a new day, with new surprises.

Round 3: How did you find your interests, moreover, what advice do you have for students without a set career path in mind?

Life is a journey – always offering you new opportunities. Do something and learn from it, then proceed to the next thing.

I am still discovering who I am through a long and wandering journey – but I have always been committed to following my interest in researching life, meaning and fulfillment.

Round 4: In hindsight, what is something you wish you knew in high school or university about your current career?

There is no such thing as absolute objective  truth (and that is another lie!)

Subjective realms such as emotions, psychology, spirituality, social sciences, networking, story telling, myths – all are lawful.

It’s just that they are lawful in a way that is different from the laws of science.

But  they are lawful in their own way, and you can discover how they work through experiencing the realms directly.

Round 5: Open the floor to any last words of advice you would like to share with the students in our audience.

  1. Intrinsic  Motivation – doing to learn and seeking fulfillment
  2. Research life, travel if possible, and volunteer in a way that is satisfying.
  3. Do what interests you – read, read, read
  4. No regrets
  5. Life begins at the end of your comfort zone
  6. Tackle with enthusiasm something that you are avoiding, and see what you learn.
  7. The intelligent universe is treating you like a six year old kid – offering you safe opportunities to learn and play and grow
